The Art of Putting on a ShowHave you ever did a presentation or speech and come home exhausted afterwards? This use to happen to me often and happens to many other speakers I know who come home completely drained of their energy after a presentation. Doing presentations and speeches really is a marathon that you must have stamina for. Even the most world-renowned speakers still admit to feeling winded by the end of a presentation.

When you put all of your energy and effort in to sounding and looking your best, it makes sense that you would be tired afterwards. The same goes for those who exert themselves in playing sports or act on stage. "Playing to a persona" can be energy draining, especially when there is an audience watching.

Its why I like to compare speech giving or speaking in public to being on a stage-- you really are putting on a performance. Public speaking is a lot like acting in a play; there is stamina, exertion and excitement on stage when you are speaking to an audience.

To prepare for the type of stamina that is needed to 'put on a show,' following a regimen similar to the way athletes or actors would prepare before the big game or big night on stage is essential: a good sleep; choosing to eat healthy foods prior to the event; preparing days in advance with rehearsed notes and slides; and voice warm-up exercises the day of always help in having the right amount of energy in front of an audience.

And while an energy drink at the time may feel like the right idea to give you that 'kick' you need the day of, coming down from the 'high' afterwards is not always pleasant, so don't reach for that redbull if you feel tempted!
